Zayed National Museum: Saadiyat Island’s next cultural icon

What the museum is about:

Zayed National Museum serves as the national museum of the United Arab Emirates, aiming to share the country’s history from early prehistory to the present while honouring the values and legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The museum showcases the UAE through a variety of objects, archives, films, sounds, and interactive installations, allowing visitors to engage with history in a living and tangible way.

The curatorial vision prioritises people. Six permanent galleries highlight key themes in the UAE’s story: Our Beginning, Through Our Nature, To Our Ancestors, Through Our Connections, By Our Coasts, and To Our Roots. Explore them here: Galleries. Together, these galleries explore leadership and nation-building, the diverse landscapes and wildlife of the country, deep archaeology, trade and cultural exchange, maritime life, and inland traditions.

The content is crafted to be immersive and multisensory. For instance, the "Through Our Nature" gallery utilises artistic dioramas, natural specimens, and multimedia to transport visitors into mountainous, desert, oasis, and marine environments, illustrating how the environment has shaped daily life and beliefs. The journey expands in the "To Our Ancestors" gallery, which examines evidence of human activity in the region over vast timescales.

The museum’s narrative spans approximately 300,000 years, connecting the early human presence to the present-day federation era. In addition to social and environmental history, it highlights exceptional objects that anchor its narrative, such as rare Blue Qur’an folios, the Magan boat, representing Bronze Age maritime networks, and early pearls from Gulf waters, illustrating beliefs, craftsmanship, and exchange.

As a public institution, Zayed National Museum also seeks to inspire the next generation of researchers, historians, and cultural professionals through learning programs, research access, and community engagement. This extends its collection beyond display into education and skills development.

Architecture and sustainability

The main galleries are located within a landscaped mound, featuring faceted panels that symbolise the topography of the UAE. Rising above the mound are five lightweight steel towers, inspired by the tradition of falconry and designed aerodynamically to function as solar thermal chimneys. These towers draw cooler air into the building, serving as an environmentally conscious solution for climate control. This blend of symbolism and passive cooling is a key element of the design narrative created by the architects.

Your visit starts outdoors: Al Masar Garden.

Before you enter, you will walk through Al Masar Garden. This 600-meter outdoor gallery stretches from the Saadiyat coast between the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi to the museum's entrance. The garden showcases native plants and trees representative of desert, oasis, and urban environments. It also features sculptures, multisensory installations, a working falaj, and a timeline of Sheikh Zayed’s life.

Inside the museum: six permanent galleries

The museum features six core galleries, a temporary exhibition, and an outdoor gallery. The official materials describe the galleries as follows: Our Beginning, Through Our Nature, To Our Ancestors, Through Our Connections, By Our Coasts, and To Our Roots. Each one focuses on a specific chapter in the history, environment, and society of the land.

For instance, the gallery titled "To Our Ancestors" explores evidence of human activity in the region that dates back approximately 300,000 years.
